The arts and mental health charity Hospital Rooms has commissioned world class artists to work in genuine partnership with patients and clinicians to co-produce museum quality and NHS compliant artworks for the unit. They have also programmed a series of arts workshops for patients. The aim of the project is to radically transform the physical environment on the unit making it more conducive to recovery.

Eileen Skellern 1 provides semi-secure intensive psychiatric hospital care for women who have severe and on-going mental illnesses. Women using these services face a severe inequality of opportunity to engage with and be inspired by the arts due to the relative restrictions that form part of their standard care environment. We believe that by overcoming these barriers and bringing high quality arts and culture into these spaces, we can take a role in reducing the stigma of mental illness and instil people with value, dignity and wellbeing.

The project was funded by Arts Council England and through the generosity of Hospital Rooms’ friends and donors. We are also grateful to Colart who have donated high quality art materials for the project through their brand Liquitex.
